Here’s what you’ve all been waiting for, especially those who participated in the Great Fiji Butterflyfish Count: the Results!
We finally got it together after a month of crossed eyes from looking at the computer screen and sore fingers from typing in those digits; the results show that it was all worth it.
The event received overwhelming support and participation from various resorts, dive operations, youth groups, village groups, Non Government Organizations, Institutions and individuals.
277 counts were recorded by over 200 people in 10 regional sites.
We received results from 80% of the registered participants. A big Vinaka Vaka Levu to you all. Our results database is constantly being updated and we would appreciate results from anyone who did the count and are still holding on to them.
Results from the event were sent in from Beqa, Coral Coast, Kadavu, Kubulau, Mamanuca Islands, Savusavu, Suva, Taveuni, Vatu-i-Ra and Yasawa Islands.
The Mamanuca region had the highest count numbers and, together with Beqa and Taveuni Islands, 100% of the species of Butterflyfish found in Fiji waters. See Map of Fiji showing Butterflyfish species distribution and numbers across Fiji | ![]() |
![]() |
The most numerous species found in each region was identified as the representative Butterflyfish for that region. See Most Common Butterflyfish in region to find out which Butterflyfish was observed the most in that area. |
To simplify our understanding a little bit, results from each site were combined to give regional averages. See Graph of regional differences in Butterflyfish numbers and Species numbers | ![]() |
We have also pooled the results to find out the top 10 most common Butterflyfish in Fiji. See Fiji’s Top Ten Butterflyfish. |
.Finally, we hope that all who participated in The Great Fiji Butterflyfish Count had a fun and educational experience, and will treasure those Butterflyfish moments in years to come.
The event would not have been possible without the generous contribution of our sponsors; Ocean Soaps, The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL), Marine Ecology Consulting and Resort Support. Vinaka Vaka Levu!!!!
To our committee members; Government of Fiji, (Departments of Fisheries, Environment and Tourism) Marine Ecology Consulting, Resort Support, Conservation International, SEAWEB and the Mamanuca Environment Society; thanks to you all as well.
We hope to organize something similar in a bigger and better way in the near future and would welcome any comments, criticism, feedback etc to make this a special event for Fiji.
